FAQ - Oregon State MBA

Program Information

How long will it take to complete my degree?

All tracks for the MBA programs are either 45 (accelerated) or 60 credits (standard) in length. The minimum amount of time it takes to complete a degree in Corvallis programs is 9 months with a fall term start. The minimum amount of time it takes to complete a degree fully online or via our hybrid program is 21 months with a fall start. The length of time to complete may vary per student.

How can I qualify for a 45-credit (accelerated) MBA program?

  • Students who have earned an undergraduate business degree from an AACSB- or EQUIS-accredited institution or business minor from OSU within the past 10 years may be eligible to participate in our accelerated MBA program.
  • International students who have completed the INTO OSU Graduate Business Pathway program are eligible for the accelerated MBA program.

Can I complete my degree online?

Absolutely. You can enroll in any of our fully online graduate business programs, or, if you are looking for the flexibility of an online program with the added value of face-to-face meetings, our hybrid programs (available in Portland) provide you with the opportunity to complete your degree with a combination of online content and in-person sessions.

The number of in-person sessions required for each hybrid course will depend on the course’s learning objectives. Portland in-person classes are held at the OSU Portland Center at Pioneer Square, typically on weekday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

Students requiring an international student visa are not eligible for our hybrid programs. Additionally, all Core 1 coursework is currently offered fully online.

Where and when are the in-person classes held for the Portland hybrid program?

  • Portland: In-person classes are held at the OSU Portland Center at Pioneer Square. Classes are typically held on weekday evenings from 6 to 9 pm.

I hear that OSU is on a quarter system, what does that mean?

  • OSU has three terms (called “quarters”) each academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring). Classes are 10 weeks of instruction plus one week for finals (for comparison, semester systems typically have two 15-week terms in their academic year).
  • OSU also has a Summer term that offers different sessions for classes including accelerated course formats. Most graduate business classes meet only during fall, winter, and spring terms.
  • Please see the academic catalog that lists the General Catalog & Schedule of Classes for more information.

When can I start?

  • The accelerated 45-credit programs start in the Fall term only.
  • Students beginning the 60-credit MBA program should plan to start in the Winter, but can start the MBA program any term.
  • For more information on term start dates, please visit the academic calendar.
  • Our recruiters would be happy to discuss the best term to start your MBA program. Please email GradBusiness@oregonstate.edu or call 541-737-5510 to schedule an appointment.

GMAT and GRE Information

Do I have to take the GMAT or GRE?

  • The GMAT (or GRE) is required as a standard for admission for AACSB-accredited schools. There is potential for a waiver.
  • The GMAT and GRE offer a standard method of evaluation across academic backgrounds for people seeking admission into an MBA program.
  • We accept either the GMAT or the GRE. However, the GMAT is the preferred exam as it is designed specifically for students hoping to pursue an MBA.
  • At OSU, we believe that the GMAT and GRE ensure students that they are surrounded by peers in their classes that have met standard high caliber requirements for admission. It’s value-added.
  • GMAT and GRE scores are often used as a primary factor in determining scholarships awards.
  • Effective 2019, we now also accept the Executive Assessment exam for experienced, working professional applicants.

Where can I gather more information on the GMAT or GRE tests?

  • The GMAT and GRE websites both contain information on the tests, as well as practice exams, study guides, and information on how to register.
  • Your scores are valid for five years.
  • If you have taken the exam multiple times, your most recent test date is considered on your application.
  • Kaplan offers practice tests and other opportunities to help you prepare for these exams.
  • GMAT and GRE preparation may take 2-3 months. GMAC recommends setting aside three months to study for the exam. Research shows that is typically the point at which scores will plateau. Consistency is key when it comes to dedicating your time to reviewing study materials and preparing for the exam.

What are the minimum scores required for the GMAT and GRE?

We do not have minimum score requirements for the GMAT and GRE; however, to be competitive for admission, we recommend:

  • GMAT: Total score of 570 or higher, with subscores in at least the 20th percentile and an Analytical Writing score of 4.
  • GRE score of 315 or higher with Verbal and Quantitative scores in at least the 30th percentile and Analytical Writing Score of 3.5.

How do I send my scores to OSU?

Scores are sent directly to OSU electronically by both testing agencies if you enter OSU’s institutional codes:

  • GMAT: Our code is PW4-DR-05
  • GRE: Our code is 4586

Do you ever waive the GMAT or GRE requirement?

In some cases we will consider waiving the requirement. Please visit our GMAT/GRE waiver page for more information.

Note that the GMAT/GRE waiver is reviewed as a part of your completed application for admission.
